Marquetry by Gorham

A three piece marquetry by Aimee Gorham is located in the main hallway of Jefferson High School.  The woodwork reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

A nice sentence from the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson.

Each of the three woodworks is approximately eight feet by three feet in size.  The artwork is in need of cleaning and repair.  The center piece (without words) has been damaged more substantially.  The artworks were made as part of the Works Project Administration in the 1930s.
